The Durston Rawhide Mallet is crafted from buffalo rawhide, featuring a screwed and glued head mounted on a hickory handle. With head dimensions of 32mm x 63mm, a total length of 225mm, and a light 4oz weight, this mallet is an essential tool for shaping and forming metal in jewelry workshops without leaving marks on the workpiece. The head comprises tightly rolled hide soaked in resin or shellac for durability, and should be conditioned before use for optimal performance: rasp off the hardening compound, soak the head in water, and rasp again. Once conditioned, the mallet provides a soft, non-marring striking surface. Lighter than metal-weighted models, this mallet is ideal for delicate forming jobs and offers long service life; heavier, metal-weighted versions are available for more demanding tasks.
