Description
The Durston Rawhide Mallet with internal lead weight is constructed from buffalo rawhide, with a screwed and glued head attached to a hickory handle. The mallet features a head with dimensions of 78mm x 42mm, a total length (including head) of 225mm, and weighs approximately 12oz. As a natural product, slight variations in size are expected.
Ideal for shaping and forming metal in jewelry workshops without leaving marks, the mallet’s head is made from tightly rolled leather (hide) soaked in resin or shellac for hardening. Prior to use, it should be conditioned by rasping off the surface hardening compound, soaking in water, and rasping again to achieve a soft, even striking surface. The added internal lead weight provides additional impact for tasks requiring more force, while still maintaining the gentle touch necessary for fine work. Over time, the head can be trimmed as needed for continued optimal performance. This mallet is available in other sizes and weights to suit different workshop requirements, ensuring long service life for precise forming.
